Presentation by photographer, writer, and educator Aaron Taylor

In preparation for our "Self-Portrait" competition, Aaron Taylor will talk about what makes a good portrait, tips for taking your own photo, and ways to enhance it in Lightroom/Photoshop.

"I love photographing people and spreading to others my passion for photography. As your photographer or mentor, you'll get someone excited and happy to work with you. I'll bring a relaxed, easy-going energy to our time together.

After 32 years living in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, I have settled in Columbus, Ohio. I find constant love, support, and motivation from my wife, Megan, my preschooler, Xavier, and my toddler, Violet.

On January 8, 2019, my work was published in a feature article in Digital Photographer magazine. The article, titled "Unlock your kit's potential," focused on getting the most out of our camera gear, including creating professional headshots in a kitchen!

On September 6, 2017, I was the featured guest lecturer at the Westbridge Camera Club. I spoke about my approach to portraiture as well as editing techniques and skills in Lightroom and Photoshop.

From March 2016 to March 2017, I was an independently contracted writer for Improve Photography. You can find my articles as well as my guest host episode on the Portrait Session podcast here. You can also see my photography featured on Shutterfly's Family Photo Ideas interactive website.

In August 2017, a few photographer friends and I started a new website dedicated to sharing our love and knowledge of photography. We call ourselves the Photographers' Cooperative. The name says it all. We're about helping each other and all of our readers succeed as photographers. Check out this new adventure of mine here.

Aside from life as a photographer, I am a National Board Certified English teacher. I taught in Montgomery County Public Schools in Montgomery County, Maryland, from 2006 to 2016, both at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and Rockville High School. In Columbus, I have taught stop-motion animation with STEM-U in Worthington and English at the Wellington School. I have also published articles about parenting for Columbus Moms Blog. I am also the featured photography instructor at Columbus Idea Foundry.

If you're looking for a straight-forward, low-stress photographer and educator with a human touch and a sense of humor, then I'm your guy. “
